Old Bruce J BBQ started with a hand-me-down smoker and a couple of friends learning how to barbeque on the weekends. What started as an excuse to drink beers outside, quickly became an obsession and now a passion.
That one smoker has multiplied to over 5 smokers and one big bad custom rig. Bruce cooks Michigan style barbeque with inspiration from midwest flavors, specifically apples and local apple cider.
For over five years the Old Bruce J barbeque team has been learning, practicing, experimenting, and exploring barbeque recipes and techniques. Bruce’s ultimate goal was always to be good enough to sell barbeque and to serve people food they love. After years of hosting friends in our backyard, we stepped out and started selling our barbeque in the winter of 2019. Since then we have catered and hosted over 50 events and are proud to serve Michigan barbeque.

Born and raised in Royal Oak, MI. Bruce J’s interest in barbeque started in the backyard. Bruce’s interest in barbeque sparked with the love of watching and “manning” the fire box. His obsessive love and passion for mastering the pit has grown from a spark to a rip roaring good time. Today he can be caught running his custom pit in his barbeque uniform: cowboy boots, jeans, barbeque hat, and a barbeque stick – an essential tool for this pitmaster.

The Origin of the Swinehorn
Drawing inspiration from the allusive Jackalope, we combined a pig (swine) and a cow (longhorn) to make our mascot and logo, the Swinehorn. While Bruce J, our founder, is not technically old, he is a good old boy and a friend to all, before you know it you will catch yourself calling Old Bruce J!
